Happy National Hot Cocoa Day! Yep, that's actually a day (look it up if you don't believe me). To celebrate I finally recorded my new vegan hot chocolate recipe, which I've been perfecting over the last few weeks. I've experimented with different nut milks and flavors and this one is the richest and tastiest yet! Plus, it's free of gluten, soy and sugar and you can use all bulk ingredients. Enjoy!

Violette & Rizwan's Raw Breakfast Power Shake

In 2009 I met a woman named Violette and she told me about this amazing raw shake she makes everyday, and then she kindly emailed me the recipe to share with you! Violette got it from her friend Rizwan Mirza, and it's absolutely fantastic.

Mary's Tropical Fruit Smoothie

My sister Mary sent me this recipe a few years ago with a very cute picture of her enjoying it with the GlassDharma straw I gave her. Though it's a little high in natural sugars, it's a great occasional treat when you need something refreshing and crave some tropical fruit. If you want to make it extra eco, buy fresh fruit and freeze it yourself - you can even juice your own oranges! Then buy some flaxseed in bulk and it's completely packaged free!

Vegan, Alkaline Recipes from Nik Tyler

Way back in 2009 Nik Tyler (aka, the man who inspired me to be vegan) went to "two transformative weeks at The Rancho De Sol-Ph Miracle Ranch" and came back with incredible enthusiasm and energy. So much so that he sent me daily emails of the foods he had been making, with beautiful pictures. I posted these on Eco-Vegan Gal and they are some of the most popular recipes on the site.

These recipes are also gluten-free, soy-free, oil-free, sugar-free and anti-candida. Some are also salt-free and raw.

I rarely drink soy milk for a couple of reasons:
  1. I don't drink/use it fast enough and most of it goes bad
  2. I try to avoid soy
Instead of soy, I like almond, rice, hemp, or coconut milks; but I rarely buy those either because of the 1st reason.

However, occasionally I'll make a recipe that calls for a nut milk, so instead of going to the store and buying it, I make my own. Believe it or not, making almond milk is very easy and fast. It requires a little planning because you need to soak the almonds (you can skip this step but it won't turn out as well).

If you're wondering, "what is a frappucino", clearly you don't go to Starbucks, and I don't blame you. While their coffee and tea drinks are tasty, they're certainly not healthy - they're full of sugar and usually not organic. Plus, there are only a few vegan options (though they're working on that and have been adding more to the menu). I recently tried their soy frappucino (which by the way is a sugary, blended iced coffee drink) and while it was good, I felt super guilty knowing what was in it. But every now and then I crave that sugary coffee taste, so luckily there's a healthy option!

Here's a delicious, healthy recipe for vegetables that is quick, easy, and involves no cooking or baking that will give you tons of energy and nutrition: green juice! All you need is a juicer (such as the Omega 8004 like I have), a bunch of your favorite green veggies, and about 10 minutes of time. It's a great idea to have it for breakfast because it's a natural energizer and mood booster, so it sets you up for a great, happy day.
