New vegan makeup from Urban Decay

Urban Decay just launched some new vegan makeup! I love their products because they are so fun - these especially.

According to a PR manager, "all our NEW spring 2010 products are vegan with the exception of the following items: Retrograde Stardust Eyeshadow (dark purple) 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Binge (navy blue) and Crash (purple)"

Video coming soon, but I tried the Stardust Eyeshadow, the 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil, and the Lipstick.

The Lipstick was my favorite because the color, "Naked", was very subtle - I say "was" because it was in my purse when it was stolen a few weeks ago : ( . It was really smooth in texture. I loved the case too - it had a little sword sticking out.

The eyeshadow and pencil are fun, but mainly for going out on the town. They are very sparkly, so they're great when you're in a party mood or going to a club.

Vegan Drinks at Pizza Fusion, Santa Monica

I finally went to Vegan Drinks for the first time, which was an easy decision because it was at Pizza Fusion (you know how much I love them). It was a great time and I was bummed that I couldn't stay very long - an hour wasn't enough. Within an hour there were already 30 people there, mingling and having a great time. 100 people RSVP'd, and at least 50 attended.

The energy was very relaxing and comfortable - I felt I could easily speak to everyone. I was especially thrilled to finally meet Lex and Kristen of Vegan-LA, and they organized the event (along with Jason).

Be sure to join the free Meetup.com group so you can come next time!

Fakery Bakery

I finally contacted Fakery Bakery to try some of Brittany's famous creations (thanks to QuarryGirl for the inspiration). In a word, they are incredible. In more words, they are: full of flavor, unique, satisfyingly sweet, fresh, well-crafted...

I want to encourage you to go to Locali on Sunday, January 31st for the bakesale fundraiser for Haiti, but Brittany will be there with her delectable treats (as well as many others).

I enjoyed:
  • Baklava ~ tastes like the "real" thing
  • Chocolate Whoopie Pie with Vanilla Filling ~ moist, very sweet
  • Peanut Butter Cup ~ tastes like Reese's!

Seed Kitchen - new Seitan Sirloin Burger!

I should call this post, Ode to Seed Kitchen...

Just when I thought Seed Kitchen couldn't get any better - it did. The master chef that is Eric Lechasseur invented a new burger called the Seitan Sirloin, and it may well be my favorite item on the menu, which gives me another reason to call this restaurant my #1 in Los Angeles.

The home-made seitan is topped with carmelized onions in balsamic vinegar, dijon mustard, and vegan blue cheese, and the combination of such different flavors - spicy, sweet, and sour - is unreal. It's topped with a sunflower seed bun, which adds a little bit of crunch to it. This burger has a very unique flavor, and is so authentic that it left my non-vegan friend scratching her head and wondering how it was vegan.

Check out this cute video my friend Christy Morgan made:

And there's another new addition to Seed: a few nights ago I got a sneak peak of Eric's new mini cupcakes - so glad he brought the cupcakes back! I love the bite-size; in fact I find them so much easier to eat that way (the old cupcakes were a little awkward to eat because they were so big). And their popularity is evident already - they were almost gone when I got to the restaurant tonight!

Tonight I finished off my meal with some other desserts: a chocolate truffle and a chocolate mousse with gold flakes. The truffle is solid on the outside and creamy in the inside, with a great dark chocolate taste. The mousse is delectable - perfectly smooth and certainly satisfied my chocolate craving.

Humanitaire: vegan store now open in Santa Monica!

Humanitaire, a vegan store, just moved to Main Street in Santa Monica! I was blown away by the amazing products they have there - from men's & women's shoes to handbags to kids stuff to tee shirts to jewelry! Their products are even eco-friendly, people friendly (no sweat shop labor), and some are even organic - this is eco-vegan heaven!

CAUTION: This video may give you the urge to run out to Humanitaire immediately! But don't worry, if you don't live near Santa Monica, they also have an online store!

Featuring:

Store hours:

closed Mondays

Tip ~ when you're done shopping, check out the vegan soups next store at Panini Garden next door, or Finn McCool's or Lula Mexican across the street.

Organic Margaritas in Los Angeles

I went on a search today for organic margaritas in Los Angeles, and was pleasantly surprised to find 10 across the city! I posted my list on Citysearch, so please check it out. Did I leave any place out? If so, please let me know if in the comments below and I'll update my list.

Most of the restaurants use 4Copas tequila, which claims to be "The World's Only Certified Organic Tequila".

Sprinkles has vegan cupcakes!

UPDATED:

Sprinkles now has vegan cupcakes! They are one of, if not the most popular places in Los Angeles to buy cupcakes from, and I always felt left out when people bought them - no longer a problem!

Here are the details:
  • What flavor: red velvet (currently the only flavor)
  • Where: according to a rep, they are "available in all our stores, every day of the week!" (click here for locations across the country)
  • According to VegNews Sprinkles uses "100-percent recycled materials for its packaging, and since its opening in 2005, the company has donated $1.3 million to local and international charities"
  • According to L.A. Times they are "made with soy milk, tofu-based cream cheese and pure coconut oil"
I haven't had a chance to try them yet, but in the meantime check out QuarryGirl's review

Speaking of vegan cupcakes, Yummy Cupcakes announced that they are going to start selling vegan cupcakes everyday now! In the past, they were only available a few times a week. YAY!

Word on the street is that Seed Kitchen is bringing back their cupcakes too. : )

Earth Cafe raw cheesecakes

I've been a fan of Earth Cafe's raw vegan cheesecakes for a while, but this time I tried 4 in a row to find out which was my favorite. You'll have to watch the video to see which is number one, but I really enjoyed all of them. They are creamy with a crunchy nut crust, and they're very fresh in flavor. While they don't really taste like authentic cheesecake, you will appreciate them since they are healthy and filling.

I enjoyed:
  • Rockin Raspberry
  • Strawberry Fields Forever
  • Cherry Dream
  • Cali Style Lemon
Taste: 9/10
Unique flavors: yes
Organic: whenever possible
Local & Fairtrade: not sure (the company is based in CA)
Healthy: yes - they're raw and free of gluten, wheat, cholesterol, refined sugar, and hydrogenated oils
Eco-Friendly packaging: sort of - made from post consumer material
Portion Size: medium/large (very filling)
Price: moderate-expensive (typical for raw food)

Akasha - dineLA week October 2009

So, here's testament that I'm really behind in my editing - this video is from last October! But, I pulled it from my queue because dineLA week is happening once again, and Akasha is taking part. (Check out QuarryGirl's great post on other restaurants participating in dineLA) **Make sure to call ahead and give them a heads up that you're a vegan when you make a reservation.

I've been to Akasha several times and each have been satisfying. I really enjoyed my experience during dineLA, and they have a lot of vegan options. However, I remember my waiter being a little unsure about what was and wasn't vegan, so I had him double-check everything with the chef. Nonetheless, I really appreciate Akasha for having such eco-friendly and healthy food; they even mention which local farms they support on their menu!

I enjoyed:
  • Pumpkin Pie cocktail
  • Fig Salad
  • curried lentil soup
  • Market Vegetable Plate
  • Local Apple Crisp with soy ice cream
Taste: 8/10
Unique menu & flavors: yes
Organic: yes
Local & Fairtrade: whenever available
Healthy: yes - "no artificial preservatives, colors, flavors, trans fats, nitrates, hormones or antibiotics."
Eco-Friendly: yes (check out their about page for details)
Customer service: good, professional, could be more knowledgeable about veganism
Atmosphere: well decorated, nice lighting = great for a date
Location: pretty central to L.A., in a great part of Culver City
Parking: free in city parking lot
Portion Sizes: medium

Friend going vegetarian/vegan

I got an exciting email yesterday from a friend I haven't spoken to in a while: he's thinking of going vegan (or at least vegetarian)! He said, "right now, I'm trying to transition away from meat and a generally crappy diet over the last couple of weeks. I've cut down to just lean turkey and will probably go completely meatless by Wednesday...Part of the reason I'm planning this is that I'm fighting in a boxing tournament at the end of March, so I'm looking to lose some weight, but I also need to keep my strength and energy."

I am thrilled, especially since he contacted me for advice. But I would love your insight too, so I can give him some really well-rounded tips.

#1 resource right now would be PCRM's 21 Day Vegan Kick Start

Here are his questions:
  • Are there any good books or resources for beginners? (I suggested The Kind Diet, since it's half recipes and half informational; and Skinny Bastard (though I haven't read that)
  • Beef and chicken is a big part of my current diet, so I'm going to need to replace it with something... (I suggested Gardein and some Morning Star products since they're similar to meat in taste/texture/appearance and easy to find)
  • Is it possible to eat a vegan diet without spending ridiculous amounts of money on your food and/or spending ridiculous amounts of hours in the kitchen? (I said yes, and he could find inexpensive options at Trader Joes, Ralphs markets, and many food chains)
  • Do you know many or any athletes who are vegan? (I pointed him to Brendan Brazier & VEGA supplements and Robert Cheeke)
What else would you suggest for him? Please leave your suggestions in the comment section below, and I will pass them on to him.

Some of you have messaged me separately and said:
  • "Definitely Gardein, take him to Veggie Grill to see how good it can taste, bayou chicken sandwich. Seitan too, that helped me transition."

Babycakes Los Angeles: review

I finally made it over to Babycakes in downtown L.A. after attending the Go Green Expo on Saturday.

The moment I walked through the door I knew I was going to love Babycakes - the scent of fresh-out-of-the-oven vegan desserts was overwhelming! There was a line, as I expected, since Saturday is their busiest day, but it moved quickly. I have a feeling some of the customers had no idea it was vegan, since the shop really doesn't scream it. Unfortunately when it was my time to order I discovered that they were out of all of the items I was prepared to try: donuts, red velvet cupcakes, cookie sandwiches, and biscuit with jam. However, I wasn't disappointed with what was suggested for me to try (see below).

The negative aspect of my experience was the customer service - while they were nice, I felt like I was just being moved through a line as fast as possible, as if they were more concerned about getting to the next person than focusing on who was in front of them. Because it was busy I felt rushed to choose from the menu, but I could barely see the options through the sea of people. And it was very loud and cramped in there (as you'll see in the video), so eating inside wasn't extremely pleasant. However, you can avoid these disappointments but either going on a quiet day, or planning ahead - figure out what you want, order it, and take it home to enjoy. And you will enjoy it - Babycakes is incredibly tasty.

**A lot of people have commented on their high prices, so I asked Erin McKenna (the founder) about this and she responded: "If we marked things up to what others did, our prices would be even higher. We get our special ingredients shipped from all over the country. If anyone has the cookbook and tried to make a recipe, they understand what these ingredients cost."

I enjoyed:
  • chocolate chip cookie ~ one of the best I've ever had, chewy and crispy, very unique flavor
  • chocolate cupcake w/ chocolate frosting ~ loved the frosting, cake was moist
  • banana chocolate chip loaf ~ really good, moist, fresh, lots of chocolate chips
  • mini banana chocolate (muffin?) ~ tasted similar to the loaf
  • vanilla macaroon ~ mediocre, very soft, not much flavor
  • brownie bite (thought it was a cupcake at first) ~ mediocre, taste like a brownie
Taste: 9/10
Unique menu & flavors: several unique flavors, menu is typical for a bakery
Organic: 80%
Local & Fairtrade: whenever available
Healthy: healthier - they use organic coconut oil, agave nectar instead of sugar, and garbanzo fava bean flour instead of white flour
Eco-Friendly: currently, the store nor the packaging is eco-friendly
Customer service: mediocre - nice but not attentive
Atmosphere: cute, but cramped
Location: since it's downtown it's kind of out of the way
Parking: street only, try to avoid going between 3pm-7pm or find 30 minute parking
Price: expensive for the sizes
Portion Sizes: small/medium (depends what you get)

The Kind Diet - Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups: video recipe

These tasted great, but they were really oily and gave me and my sister upset stomachs. Maybe we added too much Earth Balance or peanut butter?

Chaya, Venice: fantastic vegan dish

A while back I went to Chaya (Venice) and was blown away by the one vegan dish on their menu, so I returned tonight to have it again; it was just as great as I remembered.

The bread they serve is from La Brea bakery, but the waiter couldn't confirm if it was vegan or not (it looks like it is on the website). However, BEWARE: the olive tapenade has anchovies in it!

For a cocktail I had the Basil Gimlet because it was entirely organic. It contained vodka, basil, lime, and agave nectar. It was sweet, tart, and had just the right amount of liqueur.

The main course was the Grilled Organic Tempeh & Curried Coconut Lentils with tuscan kale, sweet potato puree, and grilled onion. This dish is outstanding. The tempeh is handmade at M Cafe, and they do it right because it is tender and sweet. The entire dish is sweet actually, and everything is perfectly cooked and seasoned. I have to say, this is one of the most memorable vegan entrees I've ever had and it is definitely worth a trip to a non-vegan restaurant. I didn't want to stop eating it, and I left very satisfied but not too full.

Taste: 10/10
Unique menu & flavors: absolutely, though limited vegan options
Organic: yes (at least most of it)
Local: not sure, but potentially
Healthy: yes (macrobiotic, mostly vegetables)
Customer service: good, high end (the waiter had a bit of a chip on his shoulder)
Atmosphere: upscale, well decorated, nice lighting = great for a date
Location: on Main Street, accessible via bus
Parking: I believe they have a garage, but street parking is fairly easy to find
Price: moderate/expensive ($12 for cocktail, $21 for entree)
Portion Sizes: medium/large (but you'll be able to finish it)

Chocri -make your own chocolate!

(Thanks to Rachel from Ecostiletto for this tip!)

Chocri is a website that lets you design your own chocolate - what a great gift (for Valentine's Day perhaps?). It's kinda like Pink Berry for chocolate - fun! And the best part is, it's organic and fair trade!

In regards to being vegan, Chocri states:
"our dark chocolate is free from animal products, although we legally can’t absolutely guarantee that there are no traces of milk."

There are all sorts of neat things to mix into your chocolate - fruit, nuts, spices, candy, grains - not sure how I would ever make up my mind! Actually, I would probably add rose petals, hazelnuts, and/or gold flakes! : )

**Order on or before February 1 to receive chocolate bars in time for Valentine's Day.**

Grasshopper, Allston, MA: review

Grasshopper is an entirely vegan Asian restaurant in Allston, MA, which is right outside of Boston. It has a great reputation but I haven't been there since I was in college. My sister and I made it our first stop on my trip home for the holidays.

We enjoyed:
  • Sweet & Sour soup ~ creamy, flavorful
  • "Chicken" fingers ~ sweet, didn't taste like chicken, but were good
  • The No Name ~ delicious but very unhealthy (fried)
  • Curry Coconut Vermicelli Noodle with "Beef" ~ really good
Taste: 7/10
Unique menu & flavors: not really (typical vegan Asian)
Organic: don't think so
Healthy: no (lots of oil, sugar, and fried foods)
Customer service: good
Atmosphere: average; it's a big place
Location: outside of Boston, but accessible via public transit with a bit of a walk
Parking: don't think they have any, and street parking is hard to find
Price: cheap
Portion Sizes: large (you'll probably have leftovers)
Favorite dish: toss up between No Name and Vermicelli

Whole Foods, Venice: impressive vegan improvements

I went to my local Whole Foods, in Venice, and was pleasantly surprised by some new store features.

Their new theme is "Health Starts Here", and that appropriately features a lot of vegan items. This is great because they're connecting the idea of health to veganism, which will hopefully appeal to a mainstream audience.

  • A deli display case of healthy food - most of which are vegetarian or vegan - including take-aways with info on health.
  • An entirely vegan deli section, with the word "vegan" literally written all over it!

  • New signage displaying how many local items are in stock
  • New signage encouraging customers to buy bulk items, which says, "think outside the box. Bag it yourself!" - love it!

Aside from the cool new store features, I was happy to see Lullwater Soap Nuts in a reusable sack - I think I might need to try these...

Whole Foods continues to impress me. I normally try to shop at smaller natural markets because Whole Foods is such a big business, but I have to admit they're really doing a lot of amazing things as a company, so they have my support.

Vegan food at Disneyland

It's been several years since I've been to Disneyland, so when a friend asked me about vegan options there I couldn't remember. I turned to my Twitter community for answers, and thought I'd compile them all here for your reference. : )

  • Disneyland notes on their FAQ page: "Special dietary needs — including vegetarian and medically restricted diets — can often be accommodated at select table-service restaurants. Please request special meals at least 24 hours in advance at (714) 781-DINE (3463)"
  • @Jacquiejane said: "Blue Bayou & Cafe Orleans - need to make reservations" "most restaurants have vegan gumbo, or veggie burgers on vegan buns"
  • @SaraMurphy said: "I had veg chili (I asked for no cheese to make vegan) in breadbowl in DLand this July. Near 'critter country'."
  • @HealthyVoyager said: "there is, the portobello "steak" on cous cous. It's just a'ight and overpriced, but a vegan option nonetheless" "there is also a veggie po' boy across from Pirates at some New Orleans delio"
  • @VeganAvenger said: "at Ca. Adventure there's yummy tofu curry dish @ chinese place!"
  • @Monagrayson said: "There is a Mexican place in Disneyland that can cater to vegans"
Some further research led me to this:

The Gopher: picking up trash while walking my dog

Yesterday I invested in a pretty neat tool called The Gopher, and it is great. I use it to pick up trash on the Venice beach boardwalk while walking Evie. It has made our walks so fun and rewarding - while she sniffs around, I pick up random junk that people have thrown on the grass. The Gopher is perfect because you don't have to wear gloves to pick up trash, you don't have to bend over, and it easily grabs onto the tiniest of things.

I was inspired to do this because Evie often picks up and chews on trash, and it drives me crazy. The last thing you want your (vegan) puppy to put in her mouth is a chicken bone or cigarette butt, and I have pulled way too many of each away from her. I saw someone using a similar tool to pick up trash, so the Gopher was easily worth my $10 (at Target). I'm not only saving Evie from injesting gross objects, but I'm cleaning up the beach at the same time.

Consider doing the same thing. Think of how much waste you could pick up if you walk your companion 2-3 times a day! It's quite rewarding.

Turning Shit into Fertilizer

Let me start by saying, this post is not literally about turning shit into fertilizer, however, it is metaphorically. This post is about turning a bad situation into a good one.

I lost my new purse yesterday. Luckily my phone, wallet, and keys were not inside. But unfortunately my new video camera, lavalier mic, extra battery, favorite sunglasses, To-Go Ware, organic cotton napkin, new Urban Decay lipstick, new dog toys, new chocolate, and new Brita filters were inside (it was a big purse!). I was attached to each item for various reasons (the purse was a holiday gift from my sister), and the loss added up to about $700. It's not worth explaining the process of how I lost it, but the chances of recovering it are very slim. I already really miss my To-Go Ware, which I use almost everyday.

So why write about this? First of all, sharing this experience makes me feel better. I really believe in putting thoughts into the universe; perhaps someone will have some great perspective that will cheer me up. It's frustrating and upsetting to lose something, especially something of value and importance. But, each of those items is replaceable (when I can afford them again), and ultimately all that matters is that I wasn't hurt physically. With the recent events in Haiti, I should feel fortunate that I'm alive and so are my loved ones.

I wonder what this experience is meant to teach me. One could say, "shit happens" and just move on, but what about turning it into fertilizer instead? Several of my friends suggested I take it as a lesson to slow down and pay attention. Perhaps I'm moving to fast and thinking about too much at once. I admit, I was mentally distracted at the time I lost my purse. In fact, I've been distracted for a while because I know my life needs a change. Though I'm very fortunate in many ways, I can't say that I feel fulfilled. I want to live a life that is fulfilling - doesn't everyone? The question is, how do we achieve it?

I'm going to take this shit of an event and turn it into fertilizer. I don't know how, but it's definitely time. No more procrastinating on things that I want. If I don't slow down and pay attention to what's important to me, I'm going to lose even more of it. Luckily for you, part of my change is going to revolve around this blog - I want to devote a lot more time to this.

I would love to hear your perspective, advice, and personal stories with these situations. And I hope that my lesson has inspired you to slow down, step back, focus on what's most important in your own life, and what you're not giving attention to.

Thanks for reading. : )

Y.O.G.A. for Youth: Gala Fundraiser at Marrakesh House

I had an incredible time at the Y.O.G.A. for Youth: Gala Fundraiser, which "I AM THE DREAM" campaign benefitted at-risk children throughout the United States. It was my first time visiting the Marrakesh House, and it was wonderful. The event had a great turnout and was attended by some amazing people; there was such a strong, loving energy there. The night was topped off with some delicious food, samples from various vendors, and several inspiring performances.

Most importantly, the gala was a fundraiser for Y.O.G.A. for Youth, which is a non-profit organization that brings yoga, meditation, breathing techniques, chanting, deep relaxation and stimulating discussions on the philosophy of yoga to urban youth.

Performances by:
  • Galen and Gentry Gorg ~ breath-taking performance
  • Aykanna ~ beautiful music
  • Adoré ~ fun belly dancing
  • Tom Freund ~ peaceful music
  • Amore One & J Brave of the Luminaries ~ inspiring hip hop

Shoijin: video review

Back in December I introduced my non-vegan friend Aimee to Shojin in Downtown L.A. It was my second visit and the food was just as good as the first time.

We enjoyed:
  • mountain potatoes
  • seitan pepper steak
  • miso ginger soup
  • strawberry short cake
Taste: 8/10
Unique menu & flavors: yes
Organic: yes
Healthy: yes (macrobiotic, no refined sugar, no chemicals)
Customer service: excellent
Atmosphere: beautiful, cozy
Parking: free in garage with validation
Price: moderate (that meal was about $50 for 2 people)
Favorite dish: seitan pepper steak
Non-vegan opinion: she was a little weirded out by the "steak", but loved the miso soup

Someday I will finally post my video on my first visit (from March 2009), but this second video is a little more up to date.

Want more opinions? Check out:
  • QuarryGirl - September 2009: "i’ve never met a vegan who doesn’t love this restaurant!"
  • To Live and Eat in LA - November 2009: "This place continues to amaze me and each & every time I go back it ends up being even better than the previous visit"
  • Yelp - currently 4 stars

Heath insurance: in case of emergency

This really has nothing to do with the environment or veganism, but since I've been discussing it on Twitter and Facebook, and because others are interested, I thought I'd share.

The events in Haiti inspired me to consider what I would do in the case of a major accident. I am semi-prepared for an earthquake (I've got some supplies at home), but probably not as much as I should be. Since I am a freelance worker right now, I don't have health insurance, but that is no excuse. Although I am very healthy and don't really need to see a doctor, I should have insurance in the event of an emergency.

I asked my Twitter and Facebook community for advice and recommendations, and this is what they've said. Please feel free to comment and add input. Thanks everyone - I love social media!

Company recommendations:
  • "Blue Cross or Kaiser will both work fine, just get coverage towards the (inpatient) hospital side and less on the clinic side. It will cover the high expense emergencies should they happen" (Personal opinion: I had Kaiser for a job and I loved it. Maybe I'll go back to them...)
  • "Check out Blue Cross online for their young person's programs."
  • My co-worker uses Blue of California because it was cheap but hasn't used it yet
General advice:

Intemperantia vegan chocolate truffle

Tonight I tried some Intemperantia's "Pave Glace" vegan chocolates, thanks to Siel (Green LA Girl). As a non-vegan Siel wasn't impressed with them, but I thought they were good. They have a strong dark chocolate taste but are sweet, not bitter, and the texture was smooth. They reminded me of French truffles that you can find at Whole Foods or Trader Joes.

Taste: 6 out of 10 (good, not great)
Organic : don't think so (but they make non-vegan organic chocolate)
Fair trade : don't know
Local to CA : no (ingredients from Europe, though company is in CA)
Packaging: minimal and pretty (small box with one layer of paper around chocolate)
Quality: high
Would I Buy These? : wouldn't go out of my way to because I didn't think they were that special

Their organic vegan hot chocolate looks good though...

Eco & Vegan in Hawaii (Maui)

My best friends from childhood and I are reuniting from around the country during a trip to Hawaii this March. None of us are married and we're all young, so we figure this is the time to do it!

While flying isn't eco-friendly, I am determined to make this trip as eco-vegan as possible. I would love your advice on where to go in Maui (I'll be in Lahaina).

Here's what I've discovered so far:

Besides eating, what else can I do that would be eco-friendly?

Match Meat vegan crab cakes: recipe

Match Meat Crab is quite authentic in appearance and texture. On their own, Match Meats tend to have little flavor, but when you use them in a recipe like below they really come to life. My pescetarian family was impressed - if only Match Meats had all varieties of "fish"....

You can find the Match Meat vegan crab cakes recipe here.

The Future of Food

Tonight I decided to browse Hulu's free movies, and I was excited to see the documentary The Future of Food. It's definitely worth checking out, especially since it's free to stream on your computer. While it's not as entertaining and well produced as a movie like Food Inc, it's really fascinating and informative. In fact, it goes a little deeper into topics - like seed patents, GMOs, and government subsidies- that Food Inc only scratched the surface of.

This movie will encourage you to educate yourself about what's in your food and where it came from. Buy food that is local, organic, from small companies, and has minimal packaging and preservatives; doing this is a big goal for me this year.

Big Fresh - Framingham, MA: review

Big Fresh: tried the Falafel Wrap, the Moroccan Tangine stir fry with tofu, and some iced tea. All were very good and worth a trip back

New items at Veggie Grill with Daiya cheese!

A few weeks ago, Veggie Grill in El Segundo started testing some new menu items with Daiya cheese. The combination of Veggie Grill and Daiya was too good to ignore, so I headed over last night and tried all 3 dishes: Uptown Nachos, V-Cheeseburger, and Mac-n-Cheese.

  • I loved the V-Cheeseburger and it reminded me of a real cheeseburger from a fast food restaurant, so I would imagine non-vegetarians would enjoy it too.
  • The Mac-n-Cheese was great - very flavorful and creamy, and I loved the bread crumbs.
  • I was a little disappointed by the Uptown Nachos, especially since they are very popular. They were pretty good, but I didn't think they had a great flavor and the chips were average. I think it would help if there was more cheese and better chips.
