Farmers Markets: one stop eco-vegan shop for food naturally free of gluten, soy, refined sugar, and oil

Every Friday there is a farmers market within walking distance from my apartment, but I rarely go because it closes at 11am and I'm usually still sleeping (I'm a night owl and don't go to bed until 3 or 4am)! However, since I've been eating so much produce recently I decided it's worth getting up "early" at 10am and making it a weekly trip. Today I made my first trip there in a while and bought a bunch of delicious, local food that will last me about a week - all for less than $30! The best part is, most things at the farmer's market are naturally free of gluten, soy, refined sugar, and oil (unless you buy pre-made food like bread).

I realized that I'm often writing about what I don't eat: I don't eat gluten, I don't eat soy, I don't eat refined-sugar, I don't eat oil. People probably think I'm depriving myself! Sure, I post recipes and list what I consume everyday, but I feel like it's time I highlight all the amazing food I do eat. Check out this video of all the organic produce I picked up today and stay tuned for the recipes I'll use them in later this week.

Here's a list of what I bought:
  • Apples
  • Grapefruit
  • Avocado
  • Daikon Radish
  • Carrots
  • Bok Choy
  • Beech Mushrooms
  • Tomatoes
  • Fingerling Potatoes
  • Onion
  • Cabbage
  • Kale
  • Mixed Greens
  • Cilantro
  • Basil
Keep in mind these are just the items I bought at the market today - they do not include any of the grains, seeds, nuts, or spices I use, or any other produce I've purchased recently.

Have any good recipe ideas for these ingredients? Comment below to share! : )

Hi Whitney! We've eaten this sauteed shredded cabbage and onion dish a few times lately and it's really good!! Don't know if you eat butter, but:

Saute 1T of butter in wok or fry pan with thinly sliced onion (about 1 onion to 12 oz of shredded cabbage) until onion is golden. Add shredded cabbage and saute until wilted (or however you like it). When just about done, add 1T dijon mustard and 1t horseradish. YUM.

Gonzo even likes it and he doesn't like cooked cabbage! :-)

Hi Whitney,

I really enjoy your blog...one question and you may have already addressed this somewhere (feel free to point me to the post), but can you explain why you are soy-free? I totally get avoiding any genetically modified and/or highly-processed soy, but what about fermented soy like miso or tofu?

Thanks for the recipe Helen! Don't eat butter, but I bet it would be pretty good without it.

Anonymous - I will post on soy eventually. Doing a lot of research to back up and perhaps challenge my thoughts.

You need to get more starch! There are awesome local organic yellow/white/purple sweet potatoes! Regular potatoes are a bit off right now, but sweet potatoes are ROCK'n so is sweet corn! But awesome haul! I am trying to decide once and for all what is more economical, farmers market / co-op / tj's or whole foods produce. It drives me bonkers when I buy something and then see it for less a day later at another place! 2.99 organic raspberries at TJ's today vs 4.99 whole foods... (at one time 6.99) price GOUGING!
